How bargirls should suvive now...

The ordeal of this group of women (bargirls in India)has not over yet even after the revocation of ban by High Court order as they still have to survive without any income source for another two months.

These two months period though seem short but it has come after eight long months after they lost their livelihood. Further, as the battle goes to Supreme Court, there is possibility that this period may indefinitely increase if the higher court grants stay to immediate implementation of order. The government is also playing delaying tactics in the license renewal process. In such event many of those who have so far survived may succumb to pressures of situation.

What strategies you would suggest to them?

Peaceful protest. Bring children along as well. Banners to say of the hardship the women are going through. Get the media interested and publicise as much as you can.

  what are the priority areas of hardship?
  
  food?
  housing?
  physical safety?
  
  do the women with support of the union already live collectively, pool resources?
  
  do you have physical centre? venue to focus any campaign from?
  
  local patronage of wealthy women?
  
  I am new to your blog so perhaps all this has already been discussed?

The number of displaced bargirls are around 75000. They live in diferent localities mainly in the rented houses. However many of them either had to shift or left their houses as they were not in position to pay higher rents ater the loss of their jobs.
The union was formed only two years back in which last twelve months it is continuously fighting against the government by organising protests, rallies, sit ins etc. Apart from it lot of lobbying work was done. All this resulted in loosing all the collective financial resources. The union had no assets and cannot provide shelter.

Wealthy sponsors might feel inclined to help if they could be contacted and made aware of the bardancers plight.
A person to focus on fundraising would be worthwhile.

A benefit concert. This is a cause worthy of famous names giving time to. As well as any Indian musicians that would help. Again, this need organising from a committed person.

I agree with the suggestions of Avrilo- - The more attention you can create around your pight the better, this in turn will lead to support and backing form all walks of life- which in turn can generate further ideas/ sponsership and the likes-

Yes I echo Avrilo and Floodge. Further campaigning and publicity stunts are an option. I guess any civil disobedience and the police will crackdown.

Just, you and the girls, push it as far as you can. Dont let the phallocentric system win.

what would "succumbing to pressure of the situation" entail exactly? get the liberal media(as far as liberal in idia is concerned) to get involved in the concerts that avrilo is suggesting. even high profile people(actors, business peopple) who benefit in some way from these bar girls could speak out? it's enough that women are oppressed around the world but to take away their livelyhood in a country that is suffering already is just madness. I mean, we arent talking prostitution here are we? just bloody dancing!

But would celebrities and public figures be prepared to put their kneck on the line, their clean cut reputations, for bargirls, for the poor? The certainly should, but would they. Croneyism is a part of Indian society.

While working they were earning good money. Perhaps they would have quandered all the money and now are in difficulty. The bar owners who made money on account of these poor girls should come forward to help these girls. Now they have a union. Let the union negotiate with various bar owners and get a subsistance allowance for the girls. Some philonthrophic organisations, charitable societies can also be approached to help. The point is whatever may be the outcome of the court decision, these girls should not starve and go into prostitution. In the meantime the state/central govt. have lot of schemes for women. If somebody lends the leadership, they can be rehabilitated respectably in society.

varsha, u cud try and involve college students esp women students in the prostest..im in college and i can assure that college students can help u immensely, they are active and attract media.also, thru them u cud probably get some sponsors...if ppl frm differnt strands of society start prostestn and not just the ppl who are directly affected(the bar girls), it wud spread d movemnt and more and more ppl wud knw more abt it...
