Women cannot be held after sunset

by varshakale @ 2006-06-28 - 21:14:33

As per the new provisions of the law outlined by the home minister of India no women can be arrested after sunset and before sunrise except in exceptional circumstances.

The police will also be required to give information about the arrest of a person as well as place of detention to anyone who may be nominated by the accused. A provision for compensating a person who has been detained by the police without any valid ground has also been made.

Some good news for women victims of police harrassment at last.
What do you think?

Sounds good to me, especially if routine police harassment used to take women away from their jobs and families.

Yes indeed. But more then that in India (especially in the rural areas)there is always a possibility of women getting raped within police station itself if she is arrested in the night.

No woman to be arrested without the presence of a family member or friend or an acquaintance as nominated by the woman. But some consolation the present measure is.

Yes I agree with you.

Good news but as already stated there should be some measure so that women are accompanied by someone they trust.

Yes it will be quite helpful for lot of women who can get victimised by police, but still it is not enough.

Here we call it 'transparency'. This means that police or institutions have clear codes of practice, and are subject to external scrutiny. So that the police are subject to the rule of law too.

Traditional male institutions like the police, government, church, mosque, are too often simply instruments of control and corruption. Too often they exist simply to satisfy the will of mens desires rather than providing justice and sanctuary for all. Therefore, the more that these institutions are monitored, become open to public and media scrutiny, and permit women to become involved, is the best path to creating more fairness and freedom for women, for children, for the oppressed.

Absolutely. More so in countries such as India, where majority of rural people and especially women are still illiterate and poor.

I understand. And if people are illiterate and poor, they dont have the means to challenge or question authority.
