Protest against female foeticide

by varshakale @ 2006-08-24 - 04:18:55

"Expressing concern over growing female foeticide incidents in the state, a large number of NGOs on Wednesday took to the streets of Jaipur (Rajstan)demanding stringent action against guilty doctors, nursing homes and diagnositic centres.
Holding placards and banners, about 500 activists of over 40 NGOs walked through the city roads shouting slogans to stop female foeticide." (TOI)

Hope the Government wake up!

let me share a bit of what i have heard on female foeticide...it is learned that by nature males and females are born in approximately the same ratio. A female child has more immunity than a male child. bcoz female child can fight the germs and diseases better than the male child. For this reason, during the pediatric age itself there are more deaths among males as compared to the females.
coming to ur point, India is one of the few countries, along with the other neighbouring countries, in which the female population is less than the male population. The reason lies in the high rate of female infanticide in India, and the fact is more than one million female foetuses are aborted every year in this country, after they are identified as females. If this evil practice is stopped, then India too will have more females as compared to males...vasha below i am giving the statistics of male female ratio in some countries....

In the USA, women outnumber men by 7.8 million. New York alone has one million more females as compared to the number of males.Great Britain has four million more females as compared to males. Germany has five million more females as compared to males. Russia has nine million more females than males. God alone knows how many million more females there are in the whole world as compared to males.so why is it the opposite in under developed countries....so it is very important for all of us to get together and fight this evil,i believe children are gift of gods it doesnt matter whether they are boys or girls....
bye god bless

That science is doubtful. Yes females have certain pre and post-natal immuno advantages BUT the sex ratio usually always works out the same, unless there is exceptional human or environmental intervention.

Hm. Your statistics seem fishy. I havent checked exactly, but you say UK has 4 million more females than males. That would mean that that UK has 7% more females than male. As far as I am aware the difference is less than 2%. The New York stat cant be accurate either.

You say, "if this evil practice is stopped" it will result in a greater preponderance of females. Can you just clarify, im not sure whether you are tacitly advocating femal foeticide or not?

There is little doubt about grater tenacity of female child now. Besides infanticide, there are number of other hazards, 'evil practices' that cut short life of women and establish some kind of eqilibrium with men quantitatively.

If there are many times more women then men, what will happen? Interesting.

Well said!

I'm not sure about the stat's, but I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments.

Well said. Disgraceful practice. We need a balanced world. It would help if your Govt. would really abolish dowries and other distorting factors.

I refer you all to the recent case in China, where law courts ruled against making elective abortion based on gender illegal.

George Bush was busy wittering on against embryo research at the time but said nothing about

Chinese society has suffered because of its former, communist led planned economy. Whole villages are populated by men who cant find a wife. There was an appalling scandal exposed by a BBC documentary team ten years ago, of how it was state policy to effectively kill orphan girl children.

The less men in this world the safer it may be. More practicalism and getting things done, less demigod macho idealism.

I agree, it's time something was done about this.

Found out something interesting about India today - the US uses as much energy on AIR CONDITIONING as India does for everything, even though India's population is 3 times the size!!

and the banned out of date chemical that they use in their 'old' car air conditioners. 1Kg of it damages several tonnes of the ozone layer. and as you imagine, have a lot of these old air con units.

I'm really sorry, I cant remember the name of it.

Wow!! I had no idea.

Don't worry, I wouldn't know what it meant even if you did know the name of it:) My dad used to work with pretty horrible chemicals as an engineer, so he probably knows what it is. No wonder he became a vicar!

It was part of an article about how the countries which are the biggest polluters have the least incentives to cut pollution.

I only threw it in to show Varsha her country had been in the news.

And I don't have air conditioning:)

Yes ViEiRA, there is lot of imbalance and inequity in energy and fuel use between developed world and developing countries. Within India itself there is glaring difference in energy and water consumption between metro cities like Mumbai and rural areas.
Further certain gases, drugs, clinical tests banned in the West are used in India, taking advantage of poverty, low level of awareness and ignorance.
India is about to become worlds 'clinical laboratory'. Sure it will bring some inflow of resources and profits, but it is going to turn Indians into guinea pig if something is not done about it soon.
Thanks.

Well, I hope that doesn't happen. Part of the difficult balance between developing the economy and protecting the environment.

It is difficult to conciliate these two concerns. Though they are not entirely antagonistic all the time. Sustainable development is possible through integration of both. However development agenda is largely set by rising middle class and elite and poor and resourceless have little say. This makes conciliation of concerns for development and conservation more difficult.
Thanks Jenni. x

So is the situation improving or is it just carrying on ??
or getting worse!

Surely the doctors and similar, are some how restricted by laws or some kind of professional practice code.

It is improving in certain parts, just going on as it was in some parts and getting worse in some pockets.
For India as a whole I feel the situation is improving and there is greater awareness and concern then ever before.
Laws and codes are there but people need to follow it. The problem as miramaze points out is too deeper and bigger for law to handle.

Who is it that makes the choice ?

I have to wonder on what grounds the choice is made and why.
If there were equal rights for men and women - there would not be an issue here.

I think it is both sad and tragic that female babies are aborted more frequently than male babies.

Simply to rule against female foeticide and punish doctors is not going to solve this problem.

The root of the problem starts in every woman and girl knowing her worth. Society needs to support women and girls and not put them down.

The work you are doing Varshakale is helping to correct this, emopwering women and drawing attention to women as equally powerful worthy human beings. You are helping those who are less able to speak and stand up for themselves.

Absolutely miramaze, it is not just a law enforcement issue, but a deeper social problem.
Thanks for your encouraging words and love.

Coming from a western background I can't understand all of the issues, but from my little knowlege it seams that the practice is deeply rooted in the protection of family wealth that has existed in all societies at some point. There is a BLOG about a custome where a woman can become a man by being a somthing virgin so as to protect the family wealth.

As times change wealth is not the land you own but your ability to earn money so such systems are out dated.

Part of me says F*** them, let them kill all the girls at birth if they want, the ignorant fools will find out in a generation or two that girls are highly prized, it's just supply and demand!

Not so easy when innocent children are being killed off.

This is applaing and the old ways need to be up rooted and thrown out. To much in the way of medical intervention is available now to preserve the staus quo.

Don't get me wrong, from my pint of view the western ways are just as screwed up if in different ways. Just look at me and my Blog and those of others here.

When children have been born into my family (extened that is no virgin births here) I know I have felt a protective love for them before I have even met them especially whe they are unwell.

Children are innocent and deserve and demand the protection from all adults.

We are progammed deep within our brain stem to procreate and nurture our young for the survival of the species.

I wish you well Varshakale, I am no feminist as I think western society does not need them, as well as being a man, but where there is in equality a strong voice for change is needed and i commend you in your work

Thanks VB for writing such elaborate and passionate comment.

Though I am highlighting issues rooted in India, I have no illusions about West. Just my focus due to my location and ability is on India.

I also reject variety of Indian feminism. Inequality, injustice either in raw and crude form or sophisticated and subtle form needs voice and every society bound to discover it.

Thanks for your kind words.

I couldn't sleep last night and put radio on and there was a bit on the World Service about the aborting of girl foetus's in India. Two days ago and I never even knew about it. I'm going to read more about it, I need to be informed about something.

Its good that the issue is getting wider attention. Its necessary to build pressure on government to act more proactively on the matter.
Thanks Desertflower.

dear Varsha kale
you are doing great work. The issue of sex selection and sexselective abortion needs a multi pronged approach.Although the law is in place ,no one is in a hurrry to implement it.The recent national seminar organised by the MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE in the centre had the pm and the health minister singing platitudes on the issue.Exactly two days later a friend lodged a complaint of sex determination with the cell of the ministry. She was first asked to withdraw her case through persuasion.the officials stated their fears of being threatened and harassed by the clinics, the chief appropriate authority said that the cm of delhi had asked them not to take action against doctors and the appropriate authority of that area said that her case is closed since female foeticide did not take place and only sex determination is no ground for using the law.The law clearly is about sex determination but this was how the appropriate authority chse to read it.My friend is still pursuing her case and i am with her....but the complicity of the government authorities and the doctors make it impossible to bring the criminals to book
